DAY 29

Today's weight: 200.8

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 4.8 lbs

Blood Pressure: 103/78

Heart Rate: 56

Energy Level: 7.0

Well, I've lost almost five pounds since I started. I still have a long way to go, but five pounds is five pounds. The thing is, I've been eating fried chicken and burritos and sandwiches and Snickers bars and peanut M&Ms, pretty much anything I want, and I haven't really increased my exercise much. So I can attribute the weight loss solely to giving up alcohol. How much alcohol was I drinking? On days I worked at the hospital, I didn't drink any alcohol. On days I didn't work at the hospital, I usually had three beers and a couple of glasses of wine. When I worked full time, that was four drinking days a week--five when I went to part time. I suppose most people would consider that excessive, habitual drinking, but I'm really pretty much a lightweight compared to some of the hardcore drinkers I've known. Anyway, three beers and a couple of glasses a wine five days a week turns out to be a substantial number of calories, and it turns out the alcohol was making my blood pressure go up sometimes, and it was affecting my sleep patterns and energy levels...

So, although this will be my final blog post on the subject, I've decided to continue the No Beer Diet indefinitely. I actually feel better without the stuff. Thanks to all who have followed along, and best of luck on your own journeys toward health and happiness. Cheers!

DAY 24

Today's weight: 201.0

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 4.6 lbs

Blood Pressure: 108/75

Heart Rate: 55

Energy Level: 6.5

Played tennis last night, and toward the end of the second set I strained a muscle in my left calf and had to retire. It feels better this morning, but still a little sore.

When I started this diet, I wanted to lose ten pounds by the end of the month. I'm obviously not going to make that goal at this point, but that's OK. I've been eating what I want and I'm losing some weight and I'm sleeping better and my blood pressure is great.

I've finished the first draft of the third Nicholas Colt book, and now I'm going through the manuscript and cleaning things up. Hoping to send it off to my agent today or tomorrow, so I better get to it. Cheers!

DAY 22

Today's weight: 202.2

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 3.4 lbs

Blood Pressure: 108/78

Heart Rate: 52

Energy Level: 6.5

I've been busy, so not posting everyday. There hasn't been any real changes since last week anyway. Still hanging in there. I celebrated Mardi Gras with a pot of decaf. I am a party ANIMAL!

Cheers!

DAY 18

Today's weight: 202.0

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 3.6 lbs

Blood Pressure: 109/74

Heart Rate: 52

Energy Level: 6.5

Slept seven hours straight last night, so that was nice. My weight loss still isn't what I thought it would be, but then I pigged out on fried fish yesterday and ate a "sharing size" bag of peanut M&Ms. Yet I'm still losing SOME weight, which is sort of amazing, and my sleep cycles and blood pressure have never been better. Cheers!

DAY 17

Today's weight: 202.2

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 3.4 lbs

Blood Pressure: 114/79

Heart Rate: 52

Energy Level: 6.2

Only slept about four hours last night, so not feeling real energetic this morning. But my weight's as low as it has been so far, BP still looking good. I jumped rope again last night, and played drums and rode my exercise bike. My legs are a little sore, but not bad. I'm having my usual pigout Friday lunch with my son today, and then I believe a nap will be in order. Cheers!

DAY 16

Today's weight: 202.6

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 3.0 lbs

Blood Pressure: 114/77

Heart Rate: 52

Energy Level: 6.8

Well, nothing has changed much since my last post. But I have to say, I'm sleeping better and I seem to have more energy. Yesterday I used some of that energy for some extra exercise. I played drums for about 30 minutes, jumped rope for 20 minutes, and rode my exercise bike for 20 minutes. Of course, most of that was negated by the fact that I ate a big 440 calorie SNICKER'S BAR. Oh, well. It was good. Today I'm going to lay off the sweets and still try to up the exercise. Plus get my quota of fiction words in. Cheers!

DAY 14

Today's weight: 202.4

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 3.2 lbs

Blood Pressure: 114/78

Heart Rate: 56

Energy Level: 6.5

Happy Valentine's Day!

This is about the halfway point, and I've only lost 3.2 lbs so far. But I've been eating pretty much what I want, and I've been exercising about the same as before I started the diet, so apparently the weight I have lost is due solely to the absence of alcohol calories. Interesting.

DAY 12

Today's weight: 203.8

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 1.8 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 118/81

Heart Rate: 54

Energy Level: 6.5

Back to work at the hospital tonight, so I have to try to get some sleep today. Cheers!

Saturday, February 11, 2012

DAY 11

Today's weight: 203.6

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 2.0 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 103/78

Heart Rate: 56

Energy Level: 6.8

Going to the seafood place to eat fried fish with my son today. Cheers!

Friday, February 10, 2012

DAY 10

Today's weight: 203.4

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 2.2 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 107/79

Heart Rate: 56

Energy Level: 6.0

Feeling a little tired today, but not bad. Played tennis last night, won the first set and lost the second. It was a good workout. My legs were already sore from drumming, and now they're even more so. I could use a massage. Maybe I'll do that one of these days. Go get a professional massage.

I've already done about half my writing for the day, and now I need to run some errands. Bank, post office, grocery. Ah, the exciting life of a published author. :)

Cheers!

Thursday, February 9, 2012

DAY 9

Today's weight: 203.6

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 2.0 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 114/80

Heart Rate: 55

Energy Level: 6.4

Slept about six hours, had a very nice dream before waking up this morning.

I need to go to the store. Out of fruit! Guess it'll be just a pot of decaf for breakfast today.

One of the things I do for exercise is play drums, and lately I've been working on the intro to Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher." It is HARD. I don't know if I'll ever get it right, but at least it's a good workout. My legs are really sore.

I've been consistently writing 1000 words of fiction a day, and I'm almost finished with the third book in the Nicholas Colt series. Book #2 is slated for a late spring/early summer release, and yesterday I finished editing some of the promo text for that. The writing keeps me busy, and it's work that I enjoy. So onward we go!

Cheers!

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

DAY 8

Today's weight: 204.2

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 1.4 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 107/76

Heart Rate: 46

Energy Level: 6.4

So here I am a week into this, and my net weight loss is only 1.4 lbs. Hmm. Not what I hoped for, but my BP is great and I slept well with the melatonin last night. Feeling pretty good.

I'm not sure what happened to Day 7. I only slept about three hours after working all night Monday night, and then I did some chores around the house and the yard and went to bed kind of early last night. I had spaghetti and eggplant parmagiana for dinner.

I added my heart rate to the stats, because it was so low this morning. It's usually in the 50s at rest, so maybe something to keep an eye on. Although I know from experience as a nurse we don't usually treat a low heart rate unless it's symptomatic (or, you know, EXTREMELY low, as in about to be dead), and mine's not.

Anyway, lots to do today, so I better get to it. Cheers!

DAY 6 (Late Entry)

Today's weight: 203.2

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 2.4 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 129/82

Energy Level: 6.4

I ate something and then took a melatonin before I went to bed Monday morning around 9:00, but my bladder woke me up at 12:40. Guess I drank too much water before bed. I eventually fell back to sleep, but I only got five or five and a half hours total. Then I had to go back for another twelve hour shift at the hospital. I'm in the middle of it as I write this, but remarkably I'm not that tired. I took a break around 10pm and ate an orange, and then ate a salad and a quarter cup of walnuts around midnight. That's all I'll have to eat till I get home. Any more would probably make me sleepy anyway.

My BP was a little higher yesterday afternoon, but I dropped another pound. Looking forward to getting home and resting and going back to being a novelist for a few days.

Cheers!

Sunday, February 5, 2012

DAY 5

Today's weight: 204.2

Goal weight: 185

Net Weight Loss Since 2/1/12: 1.4 lbs.

Blood Pressure: 116/82

Energy Level: 6.4

I haven't been strictly adhering to the Fit for Life diet, but I still haven't had any beer. I'm losing a little weight and my energy level is higher and I feel better when I wake up in the morning. I've been sleeping six or seven hours a night instead of three or four.

Tonight I go back to work at the hospital (I'm an RN), 7P-7A, so of course I won't get ANY sleep tonight. Or tomorrow night. I'm not sure if I should take a melatonin when I get home in the mornings. I'll think about that.

Cheers!

Saturday, February 4, 2012

DAY 4

Today's weight: 204.6

 Goal weight: 185

Blood Pressure: 106/79

Energy Level: 6.3

Hmm. 204.6. That's only a net loss of one pound in three days. Still, if that trend continues, I will have lost ten pounds by the end of the month. I pigged out on fried flounder yesterday, so that didn't help. But it made me happy, so I'll do it again next Friday.

A couple of years ago, I noticed that sodium causes a rise in my blood pressure, especially the diastolic (the bottom number). Sometimes it would get as high as 150/100. So, I normally try to stick to a low sodium diet. My blood pressure's great this morning, though, even after all that salty fried fish yesterday. Interesting. Could it be that alcohol was contributing to my hypertension?

Anyway, time to get some writing done. Cheers!

DAY 3 (Part 2)

Earlier I promised to say something about lunch, so here it is. Every Friday my son and I meet at a local seafood restaurant, and I've decided to allow myself that indulgence while on the no beer diet. I probably didn't lose any weight today, but I certainly enjoyed myself. Cheers!

DAY 3

Today's weight: 204.2

 Goal weight: 185

Blood Pressure: 115/77

Energy Level: 6.2

I took another melatonin tablet last night, and slept pretty well this time. No nightmares, but I did have a dream where I was back in the Navy (I got out in 1989), and I was walking to the main gate of my duty station carrying a case of beer. I was in civilian clothes. I had forgotten my ID, and I was just hoping the guard at the gate wouldn't ask for it. He talked to me about the brand of beer I was carrying and asked about where I worked, and then I walked on in. Whew!

My energy level's a little better this morning, although my legs are a bit sore from the extra exercise. Oh, in addition to the walk and the exercise bike, I also played drums for about 15 minutes. Solos, with some fast double-kick stuff thrown in, so another reason my legs are feeling it today.

I had a lettuce and tomato and mayonnaise sandwich on Pepperidge Farms Ancient Grains bread and some pasta for dinner last night. I'm having fresh pineapple for breakfast this morning, and for lunch...

Well, I'll tell you about lunch later.

Day 2 (Part 2)

Lunch!

Just thought I'd share this lovely salad with you. Well, not literally share it with you, but show it to you. Along with the veggies here I had some canned tuna and celery stalks. Yum!

Also, I wanted to note my exercise for the day. As an author I spend quite a bit of time sitting in a chair, something not at all conducive to weight loss. In fact, just the opposite. So I'm trying to gradually increase my exercise regimen. Today, I walked 1.5 miles outside in the beautiful warm sunshine, and I also did 5 miles on my exercise bike. Usually I would have done one or the other, so I'm trying to kick it up a notch.

And, of course, I went the whole day with NO BEER!

DAY 2

Today's weight: 204.6

 Goal weight: 185

Blood Pressure: 111/79

Energy Level: 6

Lost one pound already. Woohoo! BP looking good.

I finished reading a violent and disturbing (but great!) noir novel last night called Hell on Church Street by Jake Hinkson. I also started taking melatonin last night for insomnia. Bad combination. I had some crazy dreams, dreams that I was in NYC at some kind of shopping/convention complex and a group of criminals I'd somehow gotten involved with were out to kill me. I knew I needed to get out of there, but there were a bunch of different parking areas and I couldn't remember where I'd left my car (my black 1984 Fiero that I got rid of over twenty years ago). I had some sort of little chit to get on an airplane and I gave it to the wrong person...

Things just kept getting worse and worse. A noir nightmare, if you will.

Anyway, I woke up several times last night with my heart racing. Other than that I slept okay, though. I think the bad dreams were a combination of that book I finished and the melatonin. I remember melatonin giving me vivid dreams years ago when I tried it. So I might try the melatonin one more night, and then stop it if the bad dreams continue.

I'm hungry this morning, but not starving. Just a healthy appetite. I feel pretty good. Looking forward to some fruit for breakfast and a nice long walk and then a big salad for lunch. All that after I get some writing done.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

DAY 1

Today's weight: 205.6

 Goal weight: 185

Blood Pressure: 118/87

Energy Level: 6

Well, here we are, the first of February already. Seems like only yesterday it was still January! The above photo is the bottle cap from the last beer in my refrigerator, which I consumed last night (the beer, not the bottle cap). That Samuel Adams Boston Lager was the last beer I'll have until March 1. That's right, no beer for twenty-nine days. Twenty. Nine. Days. That has to be some sort of world record. Should I phone the Guinness people? Whoops, better not. They might send over a keg of Stout!

Every day I'll be posting my weight, my blood pressure, and my energy level (on a scale of zero to ten, with ten being the most hyper obnoxious skipping-to-the-mailbox babbling idiot you've ever seen, and zero being dead). It's an arbitrary scale, completely subjective, but I think at the end of this it might give me an idea of my feeling of well-being on a day-to-day basis.

The diet I'll be following on this odyssey is basically from a book I read a long time ago called Fit for Life. There's a lot of theory discussed in the first half of the book, and a bunch of recipes in the second half, but what it all boils down to is the proper consumption of fruit and the proper combining of all other foods. Fruit is to be eaten only on an empty stomach, usually the first meal of the day. For lunch and dinner you can have pretty much anything you want, as long as it's properly combined. What do I mean by properly combined? Allow me to explain...

Proteins and starches should not be eaten together. If you want a steak, for example, you should eat it with a salad and a side of steamed veggies. No baked potato. If you want a baked potato, you can certainly have that, but you should eat it with a salad (or whatever kind of vegetables you want) and not with any sort of meat. Same goes with bread or rice or any other starchy food.

That's it. Pretty simple diet, huh? It's a healthy way to eat, and you don't have to go hungry. But will the diet, along with giving up beer for the month, help me reach my goal weight?

We shall see...

Oh, and here's what I'm eating for breakfast this morning. Don't you wish you had some?

Monday, January 16, 2012

Mmm...BEER

I have to admit, I like the stuff. So does bestselling author Joe Konrath. He likes it so much, he decided to try to live on it for thirty days.

No pretzels. No peanuts. Just beer. Insane.

But if you think that's something, check this out: starting February 1, I will live WITHOUT BEER for twenty-nine days. That's right, no beer for the entire month of February.

I know what you're thinking. Jude, have you lost your mind? Maybe. But I think I can do it.

Not only will I give up beer for the entire month, I'm also going to try to eat better. My diet will consist of mostly fresh fruits and vegetables. And, I'm going to exercise more than I do now.

Jude! Don't do it! Think of your loved ones!

I know, I know. But this is something I feel like I need to try. Like some guys need to swim the English Channel or climb Everest.

Will I lose weight? Will I be in better shape by the end of the month and have more energy? Will I be able to watch THE SUPER BOWL without salivating over the commercials?

Stay tuned.
